NATIONAL, September 13, 2024: The Indian government has announced that the capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Port Blair, will be renamed as "Sri Vijaya Puram" Friday. This decision was made in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to rid the nation of colonial influences.
The new name, which has a colonial history, represents the triumph of the freedom struggle and the significant role of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. These islands, once a naval base of the Chola Empire, now serve as a crucial base for strategic and developmental purposes.
The island was the site of the first hoisting of the Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, a leader who fought for India's independence.
