REGIONAL, July 08, 2024: The National Commission for Women (NCW) and Meghalaya Biodiversity Board have organised a two-day Regional Capacity Building Workshop and Conference on "Promoting Entrepreneurship among Indigenous Women of North East Region based on Non Timber Forest Produce" at the State Convention Centre in Shillong Monday. The initiative aims to empower tribal women living around forests to start businesses or work in their areas of Non Timber Forest Produce.
Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma, in her speech said that the Commission has launched a new initiative to build the capacity of tribal women living in forest areas to start their own businesses or work with Non-Timber Forest Produce. She also mentioned that this is a special initiative for women in the North East, where there is a large forest cover and women can increase their income by working in this sector.
The expected outcomes include developing market integration strategies, identifying bottlenecks, creating action plans to overcome value chain challenges, enhancing efficiency and profitability, generating innovative ideas for diversifying income streams, enhancing economic resilience and sustainability, and creating a collaborative environment for promoting NTFP-based entrepreneurship among indigenous women in the North Eastern Region.
