15 die after goods train hits Agartala – Sealdah Kanchenjunga

AGARTALA, June 17, 2024: At least 15 died and 60 were injured when a freight train collided with the Agartala - Sealdah Kanchenjunga Express near Rangapani station in West Bengal Monday. The collision caused three rear compartments of the express train to derail due to the locomotive's impact.
Rescue operations are underway, and the injured passengers as well as train staffs are being shifted to nearby hospitals. The Ministry of Railways has announced an enhanced ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh for death, Rs 2.5 lakh for grievous injuries, and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries.
This follows an earlier announcement of an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
West Bengal state, railway, and central government agencies are working on rescue and relief operations following a train accident. Injured passengers are being shifted to nearby hospitals, while critically injured patients are being taken to referral hospitals.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha expressed grief and rushed a team of officials to assess the situation and support affected passengers.
Several trains stand cancelled on the train route due to accident.
