Priyanka releases Assam Cong ‘charge-sheet’ against BJP govt

By Special Representative Feb 19, 2026 69

GUWAHATI: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Thursday released a 20-point ‘charge-sheet’ against the BJP-led Assam government in Guwahati, which accused the state administration of indulging in corruption and using its machinery to instill fear among minorities.

The Congress leader, who is the chairperson of the party’s candidate screening committee for the Assam polls, arrived here on a two-day visit to take stock of the party's preparations for the Assam Assembly Election 2026. The 'charge sheet' was released by the opposition party ahead of the assembly elections.

The Congress alleged that the BJP government failed to keep its assurances of granting ST status to six indigenous communities and increasing the daily wage of tea garden workers to Rs 351 during its decade-long regime.

Interacting with the media at the Manabendra Sharma Complex here, Priyanka Gandhi said that the party was holding extensive consultations across Assam as part of its preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections, with a focus on selecting strong candidates and reviewing alliance-related decisions to strengthen its electoral prospects.

She said that the Congress leadership is making sustained efforts to engage with leaders and workers at all organisational levels to strengthen the party’s base and preparedness in the state.

The Congress leader added that the party is also closely monitoring the overall political situation in Assam, including the prospects, scope, and dynamics of possible alliances with like-minded parties.

Soon after her arrival in Guwahati airport, the Congress leader accompanied by top leaders of Assam PCC including Gaurav Gogoi went straight to Kamakhya Temple to offer prayers before proceeding to attend party programmes and meetings in the city.

Her visit is being seen as a significant step by the Congress leadership to energise and mobilise the state unit ahead of the crucial Assembly elections and to assess the party’s organisational strength at various levels.

During her stay senior leaders of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), district-level functionaries, and representatives of various frontal organisations and party wings.
