Om Birla to attend swearing-in of new government in Bangladesh

By IH News Desk Feb 16, 2026 117

NATIONAL: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, along with other foreign dignitaries, is set to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh's new government Tuesday led by Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the BNP that achieved a significant victory in the national elections. India’s MEA said that Birla’s presence signifies the strong friendship between India and Bangladesh underscoring India’s commitment to shared democratic values and welcoming the transition to an elected government under Rahman.

The oath-taking for the newly elected Members of Parliament will occur at 10 am at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, overseen by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. In the afternoon, President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath to the new cabinet in a break from tradition taking place at the South Plaza of the Parliament complex instead of "Bangabhaban" or President House.

Bangladesh Election Commission has published the gazette for 297 seats, confirming that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won 209 seats while the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is positioned as the main opposition with 68 seats.

In preparation for the ceremony, authorities have enhanced security measures and imposed traffic restrictions around the parliament area due to the expected large crowds and international guests.
