REGIONAL, May 21, 2024: The Nagaland government has implemented a ban on the collection of money through extortion and other unauthorised means across the state. This decision was made in order to prevent and combat the unlawful collection of taxes, donations, levies and other forms of extortion on highways, businesses and markets.

The government has also acknowledged the involvement of community organisations in these illegal activities.

The new order prohibits the establishment and operation of intra-state check gates, as well as unauthoried collection at interstate check gates by any association, group, or private individual. It has been clearly stated that those who engage in such illegal activities will be prosecuted under Section 188 and 384 of the Indian Penal Code.

The government has directed the respective district administrations and police authorities to strictly enforce this order.
