NATIONAL: The election campaigning escalated significantly in Assam Sunday with senior leaders from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress addressing rallies statewide in anticipation of the single-phase polling scheduled for Thursday. Senior BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal held a public meeting in Dhemaji where he criticised previous Congress administrations for allowing illegal immigration and land encroachment.
He underscored the BJP's focus on the welfare of indigenous communities, noting that over eight lakh land titles have been distributed to protect their rights. Sonowal expressed commitment to the full implementation of the BJP's 31-point election manifesto.
Assam's Chief Minister and prominent BJP figure, Himanta Biswa Sarma, also participated in the campaigning, delivering speeches at events in Bongaigaon, Palashbari, and Goalpara. Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a key leader of the BJP, is set to visit Assam tomorrow to continue the campaign focusing on regions such as Bhawanipur-Sorbhog, Hojai, and Dibrugarh.
In contrast, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi led a series of rallies in Biswanath and Golaghat Sunday, challenging the BJP by stating they have not fulfilled major promises made during the prior assembly elections. Gandhi proposed initiatives including job creation for youth, improvements in healthcare, empowerment of women and an increase in the daily wages of tea garden workers to 450 rupees if his party secures victory in the elections.
