Police resorted to firing in air and lobbed tear gas shells to control mob

REGIONAL, October 15, 2025: Tension in Assam's Baksa erupted after violent protests broke out outside the central jail Wednesday following the arrival of five judicial remanded accused in the death case of iconic singer Zubeen Garg.
The unrest began after fans attacked the bus carrying the accused including event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, singer's manager Siddharth Sharma, cousin and suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg and two PSOs.
Police resorted to firing in the air and lobbed tear gas shells to control the mob, which had turned violent. One police vehicle was set ablaze during the chaos.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the violent protests and urged citizens to maintain peace and allow the investigation to proceed fairly.
