Waqf row: Biplab Kumar criticises opponents of amendment

AGARTALA, April 17, 2025: Former Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb has criticised opponents of the amendment of the Waqf Act, claiming that only a small section of people were beneficiaries of the vast properties linked to Waqf. Speaking at a party event organized to create awareness about the amendment here Thursday, he reminded the report of the Sachar Committee.
The committee appointed by the central government found out that 80 percent of the Waqf land was being misused by some people.
Deb asserted that the Waqf has the third-largest asset after the Indian Railways and Army, but it was not utilized for the overall welfare of the Muslim community. Deb also criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for creating a sponsored riot situation and claiming that the bill created history by allowing Waqf property claims without compensation.
