AGARTALA, April 17, 2025: Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Thursday opined that the purposes of the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 are to address allegations of mismanagement of Waqf properties, misuse of Section 40 of the previous act, land grabbing and corruption. The amended act aims to address the loopholes in the Waqf Act 1995, which severely affected poor Muslims and backward groups.
Dr Saha in his speech at a party programme asserted that the amendment was introduced to bring transparency to the Waqf properties which were previously occupied illegally by leaders for their vested interests. He also highlighted the lack of social work and development work on Waqf properties.
As of September 2024, 5,973 government properties have been declared as Waqf properties across 25 States/UTs Waqf Boards.
Dr Saha called for strict action against trying to create unrest using a parliament-approved amendment. The bill also seeks to improve the economic and social status of Muslim women, digitize Waqf records to curb corruption, establish legal support centres for family disputes and inheritance rights, and strengthen cultural preservation and interfaith dialogue, he said.
