AGARTALA, July 21, 2025: Tripura has cultivated nearly 4,000 hectares of oil palm out of a target of 7,000 hectares by the financial year 2025–26, as announced by Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath during the launch of the Mega Oil Palm Plantation Drive at Taltala Monday. The minister highlighted the need for India to become self-sufficient in edible oil directing to reduce the money spent on imports.
The union government is promoting oil palm cultivation in South and northeast India, where the land is suitable, he said. The Minister assured that the prices for palm oil will likely increase, and farmers can benefit from selling their products.
Unlike rubber plantations, where nothing else can be grown, oil palm allows farmers to cultivate other crops between the trees. The government will support farmers by clearing land and providing saplings.
Palm oil is used for cooking, industry, cosmetics, and biofuels. Potential areas for expansion have been identified, with the government planning to cover 7,000 hectares.
Partnerships have been made with companies like Godrej Agrovet Ltd and Patanjali Foods Pvt Ltd for processing units and research centres, indicating strong government support for this initiative.
