NATIONAL, November 20, 2024: Global growth is currently at 3%, the lowest since the year 2000. However, technology is advancing rapidly and can help increase growth, reduce inequality and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) if used fairly. Inclusive digital transformation is crucial for progress towards the SDGs. G20 countries have shown that digital public infrastructure (DPI) and artificial intelligence (AI) can create new jobs and improve health and education outcomes. The Global Digital Compact was adopted at the UN Summit of the Future to promote this technology.
Systems need to focus on citizens and be inclusive, secure, and privacy-respecting to unlock growth and job creation. Common design principles like openness and scalability allow different sectors like ecommerce and healthcare to connect to these systems. A technology-neutral approach is needed to create a fair market for DPI, AI, and data for development, promoting innovation and economic development.
Fair data governance principles are essential for building public trust in technological systems, ensuring privacy, security, and the protection of intellectual property. Trust is crucial for successful democracies, and AI models need to be diverse and culturally aware to benefit all societies. The global community must work together to establish rules that create a level playing field and promote fair and transparent governance of technological systems.
