AGARTALA, April 20, 2025: Bangladesh government has begun constructing a dam on the Muhuri River’s banks in Kalikapur, causing fear among the people of the Belonia in south Tripura district of Tripura. The dam is expected to be completed before June.
It may cause flooding in the area during the monsoon.
The Secretary of Tripura government's Public Works Department Kiran Gitte visited the area on Sunday to inspect the embankment and speak to public representatives. Belonia Municipal Council Chair Nikhil Chandra Gop, Bharatchandra Nagar Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Putul Pal Biswas, Jhasyamukh Panchayat Samiti Chair Shambhunath Kar and local public representatives demanded immediate action to protect Belonia town, North Bilonia, Ballamukha and Amjadnagar from imminent floods.
The department will work day and night to protect Bilonia city and its surrounding areas from flooding, Gitte assured.
