REGIONAL, February 18, 2025: A team from Pawan Hans arrived in Kohima Tuesday to conduct inspections for the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) UDAN. The focus of the assessment was on infrastructure and feasibility in five districts: Tuensang, Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Kohima and Phek which were selected for the first phase of the scheme.
The goal of this initiative is to improve regional air connectivity, providing better accessibility and economic opportunities for residents in remote areas of Nagaland. During a meeting with the inspection team and transport officials, Transport Secretary Robert Longchari highlighted key developments and challenges.
While the infrastructure is mostly in place, there are still some financial approvals and minor modifications, such as fencing and helipad upgrades, that need to be addressed. The government must also tackle legal and land acquisition hurdles before operations can begin.
Longchari stressed that the helicopter service will not only benefit district headquarters but also subdivisions, especially in cases of medical emergencies and subsidised transportation. With Nagaland's difficult road infrastructure, air connectivity is expected to provide a crucial alternative.
Pawan Hans has already started evaluating the existing facilities and has plans to construct additional helipads in the future.
