AGARTALA, November 30, 2025: The Union Home Ministry has recently directed all States and Union Territories to rename the official residences of Governors as ‘Lok Bhavan’ and those of Lieutenant Governors as ‘Lok Niwas’ in an effort to shed colonial-era terminology.
This decision has been implemented by the Governor and Lieutenant Governors in their respective states and union territories.
Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu Sunday articulated support for the renaming, stating that the change will take effect on December 1 at his official residence.
The directive, which was communicated to all states and UTs was based on a key recommendation made at the conference of Governors held on August 2, 2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The proposal was examined and finalised by a committee chaired by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, who argued that the term ‘Raj Bhavan’ carries a distinct colonial connotation and should be replaced with a more democratic and people-centric label.
The English name for the residence of the Governor will remain as Governor House.
