PWD scam probe; Crime Branch summons Badal, Sunil

AGARTALA, February 21, 2020: The Crime Branch which is investigating Rs 640 crore PWD scam has summoned Badal Choudhury and Sunil Choudhury – both out on bail – to face fresh questioning. The Investigation Officer (IO) has sent appearance notice to them a day after former Chief Secretary Yashpal Singh was remanded to police custody for four days.
Sources said the move followed Sing’s disclosure of some vital information over preferential handling of major construction works and misappropriation of huge fund during 2008 – 09 fiscal.
PWD Minister Badal Choudhury, former PWD engineer-in-chief Sunil Bhowmik and ex-chief secretary Yashpal are key accused persons named in the multi crore PWD graft case.
CPI(M) veteran Badal Choudhury, who was a minister in four successive left front governments and inclement deputy leader of opposition in state assembly, and Sunil Bhowmik spent months in jail before securing bail recently.
Badal Choudhury although denied his involvement in any financial irregularities and termed his indictment politically motivated.
The Crime Brach is probing the case under sections 409, 418, 420, 421 and 120(B) of IPC against Badal Choudhury and other accused persons.
