REGIONAL, February 27, 2025: In a significant move towards restoring peace in the restive Manipur state, the Arambai Tenggol, a powerful Meitei group, surrendered 246 firearms to security forces Thursday. This brings the total number of surrendered firearms to 307 meeting the deadline set by Governor Ajay Bhalla.
The group handed over the weapons at the 1st Manipur Rifles campus with an additional 61 being surrendered by Meitei and Kuki village volunteers at different places. Arambai Tenggol leader Saikhom Munindro Mangang stated that the decision was influenced by Governor Bhalla's assurances, which include the complete eradication of illegal opium poppy cultivation, border fencing, the National Register of Citizens and the preservation of Manipur's territorial integrity.
The group, which emerged during a period of unprecedented ethnic violence in Manipur, has also demanded general amnesty for its members and an agreement allowing unarmed members to move freely throughout the state.
