NATIONAL, May 15, 2024: The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), a global organisation advocating for media rights and safety, Wednesday strongly condemns the murder of Indian journalist Ashutosh Srivastava in Uttar Pradesh on May 13, 2024. The PEC demands a thorough investigation to identify and punish the perpetrators according to the law.
Srivastava, a 45-year-old journalist from Jaunpur, was associated with the news channel Sudarshan News. He was targeted by unknown assailants on the outskirts of the city and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Prior to his death, Srivastava had received threats for his reporting and had requested protection from local police, but to no avail.
PEC's president, Blaise Lempen, urges the Uttar Pradesh government to take action and bring justice to Srivastava's death. PEC also stands in solidarity with the local journalist association, Jaunpur Patrakar Sangh, in their fight for justice for Srivastava.
Lempen also mentions that local media organisations have demanded the government to provide Rs 5 million to Srivastava's family. PEC's representative for South Asia, Nava Thakuria, reports that five journalists have been killed this year, including three in Pakistan (Maulana Mohammad Siddique Mengal, Jam Saghir Ahmed Lar, and Tahira Nosheen Rana) and one in Myanmar (Ko Myat Thu Tun).
Last year, India also saw the deaths of journalists Shashikant Warishe, Abdur Rauf Alamgir, and Vimal Kumar Yadav. This incident comes at a crucial time as India is currently in the midst of its general elections, with the fourth phase of polling taking place on Monday and three more phases to follow.
