Om Birla re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha
PM termed his past achievements as an inspiration for new members

NATIONAL, June 25, 2024: Senior BJP MP Om Birla has been re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha following a voice vote Wednesday. Birla expressed his gratitude to the House members for their trust and outlined his priorities of enriching parliamentary values and democratic traditions.
He highlighted the 18th Lok Sabha as the world's largest celebration of democracy with over 64 crore voters participating. He emphasised the importance of debate and discussion in the House, urging for peaceful protest methods to uphold the dignity of the House.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Birla on his re-election, citing his past achievements as an inspiration for new members. He also mentioned the previous Lok Sabha's record productivity of 97%, which increased public faith in parliamentary democracy.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi congratulated Birla stating that the House represents the voice of the people and assured him of the opposition's support in ensuring the smooth functioning of the House.
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, who leads largest bloc of opposition members after Congress, expressed hope that the opposition would receive ample opportunities to voice their concerns emphasising the Speaker's role in maintaining impartiality.
Other leaders, including TMC MP Sudhip Bandhopadhya, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Arvind Sawant and NCP (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule shared their perspectives on the occasion.
