NATIONAL, August 09, 2025: The Election Commission of India (ECI) Saturday delisted 334 regional parties (RUPPs) to create a level playing field and clean the electoral environment. The ECI is responsible for registering political parties under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act 195.
The guidelines for registration state that if a party does not contest elections for six years, it should be removed from the list. Parties must provide details like name, address and office bearers at registration.
In June 2025, the ECI directed CEOs of States & Union Territories (UTs) to conduct verification inquiries of 345 RUPPs regarding compliance with these conditions. After conducting inquiries, 334 RUPPs were found to not comply and the remaining cases were referred back to the CEOs for further verification.
After thorough review, the Commission has delisted 334 RUPPs, leaving 2520 remaining out of 2854 RUPPs. These RUPPs will not be eligible to avail any benefits under Section 29B and 29C of the RP Act, 1951, Income Tax Act, 1961 and the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
Any party aggrieved by this order can appeal to the Commission within 30 days, the commission said.
