NATIONAL, December 08, 2025: India is facing a public health challenge with obesity as highlighted by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh during the India International Science Festival (IISF) in New Delhi Monday.
Speaking at the panel discussion "Clinician–Scientist Interaction on Obesity," he asserted the need for scientific precision in addressing obesity, which has traditionally been viewed as a cosmetic issue rather than a disease.
The session focused on the increasing metabolic health burden in India with experts calling attention to the unique prevalence of visceral obesity in Indian populations.
Dr Singh warned against misinformation from unqualified dieticians and stressed the importance of regulating health advice to protect patients. He highlighted symptoms related to rapid weight loss and the expanding range of metabolic complications, urging a collective effort from clinicians, researchers, policymakers and the public to effectively address these issues.
