NHRC and UM hold a 2-day training event on human rights
Over 100 students, faculty members and jurists attended the programme

NATIONAL, September 01, 2024: The University of Manipur and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) have concluded a two-day training programme on human rights in India. The event, attended by over 100 participants included legal experts, academicians, Human Rights Defenders and students.
The programme concluded with a valedictory address by Bharat Lal, Secretary General of the NHRC, who emphasised the importance of the Preamble, Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles of State Policy. He also highlighted the government's responsibility in upholding civil, political, cultural, and socio-economic rights.
Lal asserted that the need to foster fraternity among people and urged reliance on constitutional and legal provisions rather than violence to achieve justice. He also highlighted the NHRC's recent camp sitting in Guwahati where 25 cases of alleged Human Rights violations in Manipur were addressed.
The programme marked a significant step in advancing Human Rights education and advocacy in the North-East, with NHRC continuing to work with Central and state governments, their parastatal organizations, academic institutions, NGOs, and human rights defenders, especially youth and women, to protect and promote human rights and treat every human being with respect and dignity as a way of life.
