REGIONAL, November 22, 2024: The Meghalaya Minor Mineral Reclamation Fund (MMMRF) has been established under the direction of the state's High Court to address environmental damage caused by mining activities. This fund was created in response to a recent writ petition filed in the public interest.
The court has ordered that a portion of the sale proceeds from minerals extracted under license or lease must be deposited into the fund. The court has also directed user agencies and departments to ensure that contractors using minor minerals from mines or quarries deposit 10% of the mineral rate into the MMMRF.
This money should be deposited into a designated bank account for the fund with details sent to designated forestry officers in different regions of Meghalaya. This initiative aims to uphold the principle that polluters must pay for the environmental damage caused by mining activities in the state.
