REGIONAL, September 10, 2025: Limison D Sangma, MLA from Raksamgre Assembly Constituency, filed his nomination Wednesday for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The election was necessitated following the resignation of Timothy D Shira earlier this week.
Confirming the development, Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Andrew Simons, informed that Limison D Sangma is the only candidate to have filed his nomination. His candidature was proposed by Cabinet Minister and Williamnagar MLA, Marcuise N Marak, and Cabinet Minister and seconded by Phulbari MLA Abu Taher Mondal.
Simons further stated that September 10 was the last date for filing nominations, while September 11 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal. The election is scheduled for Friday, September 12, 2025. He added that the Opposition has not filed any nominations for the post.
Addressing the possibility of an election, Simons said that since there is no other candidate in the fray, Limison D Sangma stands elected unanimously. The formal announcement will be made in the House by Speaker Thomas A Sangma Friday.
Briefing the press, Speaker Thomas A Sangma, said, “As per the schedule, tomorrow is the last day for withdrawal.” In case any withdrawal takes place, we will need to revisit the announcement and reflect on it in the schedule again. However, so far, we have received only one proposal and one nomination.
