Announced at a ceremony in Leh in presence of 500 new literates

NATIONAL, June 25, 2024: Ladakh, under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, has achieved Full Functional Literacy, marking a significant milestone in the country's education system. The achievement was announced at a ceremony at Sindhu Sanskritik Kendra (SSK), Leh, where over 500 new literates and volunteers were celebrated.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, and other officials. Dr Mishra urged the new learners and volunteers to continue learning throughout their lives, emphasizing the responsibility of parents to send their children to school.
He also encouraged students to not only seek jobs but also to create them. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for introducing the NEP 2020, stating that the policy lays the groundwork for the country's future growth.
Sanjay Kumar congratulated the people of Ladakh on the achievement of the ULLAS - Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram or New India Literacy Programme (NILP) from 2022-2027. He assured the Ministry of Education that they would provide all possible support to improve the school education system. Education has the power to change the world, and ULLAS is based on volunteerism, with volunteers registering through the ULLAS Mobile App without any expectation of reward.
The programme aims to empower adults aged 15 and above from all backgrounds who could not get due schooling and mainstream them with society to contribute more to the country's growth story. The scheme consists of five components: Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, Critical Life Skills, Basic Education, Vocational Skills and Continuing Education.
The ULLAS Scheme has benefitted over 77 lakhs people across the country, with the ULLAS Mobile App having over 1.29 Crore learners and 35 lakh volunteer teachers.
