Fractured mandate in Lai Autonomous District Council polls
Congress and MNF were the major gainers, BJP ended with two seats

REGIONAL, December 09, 2025: The Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Congress convened separate meetings in Lawngtlai to discuss potential coalition strategies following the fractured mandate from the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) elections in Mizoram. No party achieved the majority of 13 seats in the 25-member council, prompting internal discussions about forming the next executive committee.
The Congress made a significant comeback, increasing its seats from one in 2020 to seven, while the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) secured six seats after failing to gain representation previously. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made it to two and two Independents were also elected to the council.
The counting process for the 12th LADC–MDC Election 2025 commenced on Tuesday at 8 am and concluded successfully by 1:30 pm, with a total of 56,873 votes cast, including 47,769 electronic voting machine (EVM) votes and 453 postal ballots.
The final seat distribution was as follows: MNF - 8 seats, INC - 7 seats, ZPM - 6 seats, BJP - 2 seats and Independents - 2 seats. Certificates of Election were presented to the newly elected Members of the District Council (MDCs) by the Returning Officers Donny Lalruatsanga, David Lalrinawma and H Zonunmawia.
