Trump, 78, was speaking at a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, about a recent increase in undocumented immigrants crossing the border under President Joe Biden when the shots fired from rooftop of a nearby building.
At least five shots were fired and Trump fell down after getting hit by a shot on his ear. Secret Service agents helped him to his feet and escorted offstage, with blood on his right ear and cheek.
Before being driven away, Trump shouted "Fight" to the crowd. The shots were fired from an elevated position outside the rally venue.
According to CNN analysis, the attacker was approximately 400–500 feet (120–150 meters) away from Trump. A witness saw the attacker climb onto the roof of a low-rise building with a rifle and alerted nearby police officers.
The FBI has identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who attempted to assassinate the former president, making this the first such incident in decades.
The attack occurred less than four months before the presidential election and just two days before the start of the Republican National Convention.
The shooter was killed and law enforcement found an AR-style rifle at the scene. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown.
President Joe Biden condemned the attack.
