Former Jammu & Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik dies
Malik's bond with BJP government began to sour around 2020-21

NATIONAL, August 05, 2025: Veteran politician Satyapal Malik, who also held responsibility as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and some other states, died at the age of 79 Tuesday. Malik, a Jat community leader from Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat, began his political career as a student leader and was lected MLA of Chaudhary Charan Singh's Bharatiya Kranti Dal in 1974.
He served as a Rajya Sabha MP and later as Janata Dal's Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh. Malik was appointed Governor of Bihar in 2017 and later Governor of Jammu and Kashmir in 2018. He was also Governor of Goa and Meghalaya after the Pulwama terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir.
Malik's relationship with the BJP government began to sour around 2020-21 when he backed farmers protesting against the scrapped farm laws. In 2023, Malik alleged that the Center had asked him to stay silent and that CRPF's request for aircraft had been turned down.
Prime Minister expressed grief over his demise.
