REGIONAL, January 02, 2025: The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Limited (NEHHDC) has operationalised its Eri Silk Spinning Mill in Assam with a project cost of ₹14.92 crore. The facility, the largest in the Northeast, is equipped with 960 ring frame spindles and has a production capacity of 461 kg per day.
The mill currently benefits approximately 25,000 households indirectly and is expected to generate direct employment for 375 individuals and provide indirect livelihood to 50,000 households when operating at full capacity. Eri silk, also known as "peace silk" due to its eco-friendly properties, is experiencing increasing popularity due to its eco-friendly properties. However, the lack of modern spinning infrastructure in Assam and the surrounding northeastern states has delayed local utilisation of Eri silk cocoons, leading to their export to other states or internationally.
NEHHDC has initiated the project to supply yarn to the handloom sector, improve global competitiveness in terms of price and quality, and generate income and livelihood for the local population in the region. The operationalisation program was inaugurated by Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Thursday.
The primary goal of establishing the Eri Silk Spinning Mill is to support local cocoon production, enhance value through spinning and weaving, and generate significant employment for the local population. The project will also establish training centers to develop the skills of local people involved in the Eri silk industry.
