AGARTALA, June 29, 2025: Alleged internal bickering in the state BJP over the choice of a consensus candidate made the party’s central leadership to postpone election to appoint a new state President of the party. The election was slated for Saturday, but the party’s Returning Officer, Samarendra Deb, announced the decision of postponement.
Party leaders are tight-lipped over the development, but sources close to the party indicated July 6 would probably be the next poll date. The central leadership is expected to intervene to find a consensus candidate to make a new president through selection and not drag the matter into the election.
Sources said former Minister Bhagaban Das was a favorite to become the next state President, but a powerful lobby within the party registered objections citing that one of his family members was involved in an incident of moral turpitude, inviting street protests. The names of incumbent Minister Tinku Roy, the party’s senior spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee and former state BJYM President Kamal Dey are also doing the rounds.
The outgoing state President and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee has reportedly presented no choice to the leadership to avoid controversy. However, he is said to have spoken for a consensus candidate in consultation with the central leadership.
