ECI deploys central observers to oversee election conduct
For ensuring credible elections serving as its "eyes and ears"

NATIONAL, September 29, 2025: The Election Commission of India empowered by Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act 1951 deploys Central Observers to oversee election conduct. These Observers operate under the Commission's supervision and are tasked with ensuring fair impartial and credible elections serving as its "eyes and ears," an ECI statement read.
Their (central observers) responsibilities include enhancing voter awareness, identifying areas for improvement and making actionable recommendations.
Senior General and Police Observers, due to their administrative experience help manage the electoral process at the field level while Expenditure Observers monitor candidates' election expenditures.
For the upcoming general election in Bihar and bye-elections in various states the Commission will deploy 470 Central Observers including 320 IAS, 60 IPS, and 90 IRS/IRAS/ICAS officials.
