International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

REGIONAL, June 26, 2024: The Customs Department Wednesday launched a series of awareness and outreach programs in observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' to combat drug abuse and trafficking. The programmes were held at various schools, including Kendriya Vidayalaya GC, Agartala, Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Dhubri and Government Chawnpui High School, Aizawl.
The outreach programs focused on raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, the importance of a healthy lifestyle and staying drug-free. The department also held an interactive session with Dr Jasmine M Lyngdoh, Clinical Psychologist and Director, Routes, Shillong, where the ill effects of drugs and alcohol consumption were discussed.
Patients were given indoor and outdoor sports items to promote their physical well-being.
In a significant move to demonstrate its zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking, the Customs Department conducted a drug destruction campaign in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, destroying 12.48 kgs of Heroin, 45.27 kgs of Meth/Yaba Tablets, 5804.78 kgs of Ganja and 66728 bottles of Codeine-based Cough Syrups, totalling Rs 167.47 Crores.
