NATIONAL, June 29, 2024: Workshops, seminars and roundtables have been held across the country, including in states in northeast India ahead of formal introduction of new Criminal Laws, Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) 2023. These laws are set to come into force on July 1, 2024.
The laws specifically aim to provide timely justice and prioritise crimes against women and children. They were passed in parliament with the President's assent on December 25, 2023, and have the primary objectives of ensuring timely justice and recognising the legal validity of electronic or digital records.
It is important to mention that the New Criminal Laws are largely similar to the previous laws, with 70% to 80% of the law remaining intact.
However, groups in northeast India have emphasised the importance of understanding the conflicts between criminal laws and customary laws, as well as the differences between Criminal and Civil laws in enforcing law and order.
