AGARTALA, September 21, 2024: Major organisations representing indigenous Jumma people in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in southeast Bangladesh are hesitant to join hands amidst ongoing violence in two hill districts Khagrachari and Rangamati.
The clashes between Bengalis and Jumma people have resulted in several deaths, injuries of many and the burning of shops and houses in the past three days.
A joint statement against the violence was released, but the PCJSS, the largest group representing mainly the majority Chakma tribe, denied being a signatory. The statement in question strongly condemned and protested the violent incidents targeting Jumma people.
The PCJSS, UPDF, and UPDF (Democratic) were listed as the supposed signatories of the statement.
However, the PCJSS has denied being a part of it, stating that the signature of their Associate Publicity Secretary, Sajib Chakma, was forged. The group also stated that the joint statement is completely false and was released with malicious intent.
Meanwhile Chakma residents held protests in Tripura and other places in northeast India to denounce and condemn violence in CHT.
