AGARTALA, January 18, 2020: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted charge sheet in a designated court after competing investigation into shooting down of journalist Sudip Datta Bhowmik at headquarters of a paramilitary battalion near Agartala in 2017.
The central agency sped up the probe procedure in recent months at intervention of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb who had earlier taken up the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The journalist was shot dead at office of Commandant Tapan Debbarma in headquarters of 2nd battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) at Radha Kishore Nagar near here on November 21 2017.
The sensational incident led to massive protests organised by the ‘Forum for Protection of Journalists’ which was constituted after murder of another journalist Santanu Bhowmik. CBI is also probing assassination of Santanu during a political protest at Mandwai in west Tripura on September 20 2017.
BJP led incumbent coalition government which came to power in Tripura in March 2018 invoked CBI to concede demand of protesting journalists.
CBI charged five TSR officers of different ranks including the then Commandant Tapan Debbarma.
