AGARTALA, January 19 2023: After successfully forging an electoral alliance, senior leaders of Congress and CPI(M) Thursday launched dialogue over seat sharing arrangement. CPI(M) state Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, state left front Chairman Narayan Kar, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman and senior Congress leader Ashish Kumar Saha joined a meeting at the MLA Hostel 2 in Abhoynagar locality here.
They later addressed a joint press conference to speak on alleged violence perpetrated by the ruling BJP, but said less about election strategies. We are now engaged in discussions on modalities to contest the elections together to prevent division of votes and oust the BJP from power – leaders of left and Congress echoed.
The assembly elections are due on February 16 and results will be declared on March 2.
Sources said Congress has been insisting on 60:40 formula to share 60 assembly seats with proposal to put CPI(M) candidates in majority constituencies. However CPI(M) leaders want Congress to fight only in 15 seats where party has a support base.
The Congress is reportedly bargaining ‘safe seats’ in non-reserved segments.
Meanwhile state’s strongest regional party the TIPRA has decided to go solo in the elections. The party Chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Thursday said they are preparing to contest in 45 constituencies.
He was speaking to newsmen after attending a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at New Delhi. Party will stick to the ‘Greater Tipraland’ demand come what may.
