AGARTALA, July 18, 2024: The High Court of Tripura Thursday issued a directive to the State Election Commission to guarantee that the upcoming three-tier Panchayat elections are conducted in a free and fair manner. Opposition parties had moved the court alleging they are facing difficulties submitting their nominations due to widespread violence and intimidation from politically influenced miscreants.

The Division Bench of the High Court led by Justice Arindam Lodh and Justice Sabyasachi Dutta Purakayastha heard the case and instructed the state government and the State election commission to take responsibility for ensuring that the elections are conducted without any hindrance.

Senior advocate Purusottam Roy Barman said the Panchayat election process has become a farce and the court can only redress.
