GLOBAL, September 08, 2025: Nepal's Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned following unprecedented violent protests over a blanket social media ban that resulted in 19 deaths and over 400 injuries Monday. Lekhak resigned during a cabinet meeting at Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's residence stating that he was stepping down on moral grounds following the casualties in the nationwide demonstrations.
The demonstrations began after the government blocked major social media platforms turning them into an anti-corruption movement. Curfew was imposed in the capital Kathmandu where most of the casualties occurred and the army deployed in sensitive areas.
Violence has also been reported in other parts of the Himalayan country.
India has stepped up vigilance along its border with Nepal following the unrest.
