The birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci
THE World Art Day Celebration 2026 held Wednesday at Lok Bhavan in Shillong celebrated the birth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci and the 150th anniversary of the national song "Vande Mataram." The event was attended by distinguished figures, including Charles Pyngrope, former Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and prominent artists and officials from the International Association of Art – India.
The Chief Guest Pyngrope asserted the universal significance of art in shaping societies and the cultural importance of "Vande Mataram" as a symbol of national pride during India's freedom movement. He praised the natural beauty of Shillong and the efforts of the International Association of Art – India in promoting artistic engagement.
A memorial art exhibition was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, showcasing a diverse range of artistic expressions. Manaj Saha addressed the potential of Meghalaya's artistic community, noting the need for greater support and exposure while recognizing the region's artistic capabilities. Raphael Warjri, the State Coordinator, lamented the lack of adequate art institutions in Meghalaya despite its historical significance.
The exhibition featured the work of 40 participating artists and included a series of art talks by eminent speakers. Dr Meghali Goswami discussed the history of art in Meghalaya, digital artist Shovin Bhattacharjee shared insights into the evolution of digital art in India and Dr Prakash Kishore reflected on his artistic journey.
Arak M Sangma highlighted Garo folk culture and its vibrant artistic traditions.
The event concluded with Dr BDR Tiwari presenting a philosophical perspective on Indian art, making the celebration a crucial platform for recognizing and fostering the arts in Meghalaya and beyond.
