REGIONAL: The Meghalaya State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) Tuesday took a Suo Muto Cognizance in connection with death of two people allegedly owing to a dynamite blast in an illegal mine. It has served a notice on the Superintendent of Police of Jaintia Hills District to submit a detailed report to pave further hearing into case.
The notice was served based on a report in a local newspaper "Highland Post" which reported the incident.
There were reports that two people have died after a suspected dynamite blast at an illegal coal mine in Thangsko village, East Jaintia Hills. One victim reportedly died on December 23 while another Ashok Tamang passed away on January 1 at Shillong Civil Hospital.
Several others were injured with some believed to be Bangladeshi labourers.
Meghalaya police have not confirmed the dynamite blast.
