AGARTALA, March 18, 2024: Tripura is gradually making its mark in the world of professional cricket. It would not be surprising if young Mani Shankar Murasingh is seen playing in an IPL match in the near future.
The all-rounder recently joined the Rajasthan Royals (RR) team, which has a standby group of six cricketers, including former Tripura cricket captain Mani. Sources suggest that he may have a chance to play for RR as one of its key players, Prashit Krishna, sustained injuries and ruled out of the tournament.
Krishna is considered to be the main weapon of the team. Sources said Mani Shankar is likely to play for Sanju Samson's team (RR) this time.
The coaches, Sangakkara and Sein Bond, chose Mani as replacement of Prashit. However, Tripura’s star all-rounder is hesitant to speak about it, as the contract states that no one outside the team should know about the news.
Mani Shankar privately confirmed this. He had previously attended trials for the Mumbai Indians, but did not make it to the team.
Ajay Sarkar from Tripura was a net bowler for the Royal Challengers Bangalore team two years ago, and Amit Ali also received a call as a net bowler.
However, Mani Shankar is the first cricketer from the state to be selected as a changed player. Although he may not be able to play this time, it is expected that Mani Shankar, the elder son of physiotherapist Bhagyamani Murasingh, will make his mark on professional cricket within the next two years.
He made his debut against Jharkhand in 2009 and has since scored 3646 runs and taken 275 wickets in 88 first-class matches. "I am not sure if I will get a chance to play in the final team," said Mani Shankar, who was awarded the Lala Amarnath Memorial Award for the country's best all-rounder in 2020-21, over the phone from Rajasthan.
He is gaining valuable experience by bowling against Sanju Samson and Deepak Chahar, and believes that this will help him serve Tripura better in the next season. The sports lovers of the state are also hoping to see Mani Shankar in the final team for this year's IPL.
Officials of the State Cricket Association believe that this will be a great opportunity for the state's pride, Mani Shankar, to play in the XI and inspire the next generation of cricketers from Tripura to excel in professional cricket.
