AGARTALA, September 12, 2025: Tripura is aiming to become self-reliant in potato and potato seeds by 2030, according to the Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Department. The state has 23,746 potato farmers and cultivated potatoes on 47,637 kani of land or 7,622 hectares.
This was informed by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath after chairing a meeting with International Potato Centre Director General Simon Heck and Country Manager Niroj Sharma Friday.
Minister said the state has introduced True Potato Seeds (TPS), which is expensive and requires skilled workers. The state's potato production is 1.46 lakh MT, but the requirement is 1.55 lakh MT to become self-reliant.
To address this, Tripura started the Epical Rooted Cutting (ERC) process in 2022-23, which received Rs 5 crore from the Rashtriya Krishi Bima Yojana (RKBY). The agreement with the Peruvian International Potato Centre will provide technology support, capacity building, research, certification assistance, and a potato chips processing center.
The state aims to become self-reliant in potato seeds by FY 2028-29 and potatoes by 2029-30, with plans to export potatoes, Nath added.
