NATIONAL, June 29, 2024: India secured an ICC title in the final match of the T20 World Cup 2024, defeating South Africa by 7 runs. Saturday’s victory marked the end of India's 11-year drought in the tournament.
The team, led by Rohit Sharma, needed a miracle to turn the tide, and India produced one. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a four-run over, followed by Hardik Pandya dismissing Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller.
Bumrah conceded only two runs in the 18th over, removing Marco Jansen. Arshdeep Singh followed with a four-run penultimate over.
Hardik Pandya took the wicket of Miller on the first ball, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's catch. India held their nerves well and eventually won the game with a seven-run margin.
Virat Kohli's gritty knock anchored the Indian innings, posting a total of 176 for 7. India were reduced to 34 for 3 in 4.3 overs, but a crucial 72-run stand between Kohli and Axar Patel helped them escape trouble.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian team after they won the T20 World Cup Saturday. "CHAMPIONS! Our team brings the T20 World Cup home in STYLE! We are proud of the Indian Cricket Team. This match was HISTORIC," he said in a post on X.
