NATIONAL, May 26, 2027: Rah-Veer is a scheme that aims to recognise and reward Good Samaritans who have saved the life of a victim involved in a fatal accident with a motor vehicle. The scheme encourages the public to provide immediate medical assistance and transport the victim to a Hospital or Trauma Care Center within the ‘Golden Hour’ of the road accident.
The eligibility criteria for the award are any individual who has saved the life of a victim or victims of a serious accident involving a motor vehicle by administering immediate assistance and transporting them to a hospital within the Golden Hour. The financial assistance for each Rah-Veer (Good Samaritan) is Rs 25,000 per accident with certain provisions.
If one Rah-Veer saves the life of one or more victims in a single accident the award will be Rs. 25,000. If multiple Rah-Veers save the life of one victim, the award will be divided equally among them.
If multiple Rah-Veers save the lives of multiple victims, the award will be Rs. 25,000 per victim, with a maximum of Rs. 25,000 per Good Samaritan. Each cash award will be accompanied by a "Certification of Appreciation".
The scheme will be in effect until the completion of the 15th Financial Cycle, which is March 31, 2026. Detailed guidelines, including eligibility and selection procedures, can be found on the concerned department's website of a state.
Under Section 134A of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019 and the Rules for Good Samaritans notified in Notification No GSR 594E, dated September 29, 2020, no Rah-Veer will face legal proceedings without their consent. In case of any violation of the protection provided to Good Samaritans, the Rah-Veer can approach the Grievance Reparation Committee, which will be established by the States/UTs and managed by the concerned Deputy Commissioner/Collector/District Magistrate.
