GLOBAL, May 12, 2025: Bangladesh's interim government Monday banned the Awami League and its affiliates until their trial in the International Crimes Tribunal is complete. The charges against the party include abduction, murder, killing, torture and rape for suppressing the July 2024 uprising.
The Public Security Division of Bangladesh’s home ministry issued the notification two days after the Advisory Council decided to amend the law to allow a trial of the Awami League, which led Bangladesh's independence struggle in 1971.
The Awami League will now face trial over alleged crimes against humanity for suppressing the uprising.
The Awami League which led war of liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 has rejected the ban and urged party ranks to stand against the ‘fascist’ interim government led by Prof Mohammad Yunus. It said the party will fight to oust the government which grabbed the power by ejecting an elected government in August last year.
