DHAKA / KOLKATA, May 25, 2024: The Bangladesh Police Saturday released new information regarding the brutal murder of Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of the Bangladesh parliament, in Kolkata. This information was obtained through confessions made by three suspects who have been arrested in connection with the case.
The police said Anar died from an overdose of chloroform, which was used by the assailants to render him unconscious before killing him at the posh flat in New Town locality. The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has stated that the initial plan was not to kill Anar on the day of the murder, but rather to keep him alive for two days in order to obtain compromising photos and extort money from him.
The exact motive for the murder is still unknown, although media reports have suggested possible reasons such as smuggling and disputes over the distribution of gold shipments worth Taka 2 billion.
Bangladesh police officials will be conducting further investigations in India once the Indian investigators have completed their work in the Bangladesh capital.
Meanwhile Kolkata police have failed to recover mortal remains of Bangladesh lawmaker despite a search. One person who was involved in disposing off the body has been arrested in Kolkata.
