REGIONAL, April 03, 2024: The Farmers' (Empowerment) Commission has recently awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Lakadong Turmeric, a unique and highly coveted spice from Meghalaya. This prestigious GI status ensures that only turmeric grown in the specific geographical region of Lakadong, can be labeled and marketed as "Lakadong Turmeric."
This geographical indication establishes a direct link between the product's unique qualities and its origin, protecting against imitation and misrepresentation. The GI status enforces stringent quality standards and production practices, ensuring consistent quality for consumers.
It also helps preserve and promote local knowledge and cultural heritage. The GI status can lead to increased market value and demand for Lakadong Turmeric, benefiting local farmers and producers economically.
Consumers can trust that the product they purchase adheres to specific standards and is genuinely sourced from the designated geographic region. The GI status serves as a valuable tool for protecting and promoting Lakadong Turmeric, ensuring its continued significance in both local and global markets while supporting the livelihoods of the communities involved in its production.
The Commission acknowledges the collaborative efforts and unwavering support of the Directorates of Horticulture and Agriculture, the District Horticulture Officers of East and West Jaintia Hills (past and present), farmer representatives and the dedicated commitment of Shri. Demandson Lyngdoh, MAS, Project Officer of Mission Lakadong.
