IGP, seven other cops get life sentence in custodial death case
The victim was accused in a gang rape and murder crime in 2017

NATIONAL, January 27, 2025: A special CBI court in Chandīgarh has sentenced Himachal Pradesh Inspector General of Police Zahur Haider Zaidi and seven other policemen to life imprisonment in a 2017 custodial death case. The case involved the custodial death of an accused in a gang rape and murder crime in Kotkhai in Shimla district.
The other convicts included then deputy superintendent of police Manoj Joshi, sub-inspector Rajinder Singh, Assistant SI Deep Chand Sharma, head Constables Mohan Lal, Surat Singh, Rafee Mohammad and Ranjit Sateta.
The court acquitted the then superintendent of police D W Negi in the case. The accused IGP was heading a Special Investigation Team constituted to probe the case.
The case involved a 16-year-old schoolgirl who went missing in Kotkhai on July 4, 2017, and her body was found in the Halaila forests two days later.
The Himachal Pradesh high court handed over the investigations to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) who arrested Zaidi, DSP Joshi and other police officers in connection with the custodial death.
