GLOBAL, January 03, 2024: China is facing a flu outbreak with Britain experiencing a sharp rise in flu cases and four-fold admissions in the past month. Media reports said around 5,000 virus-affected patients are under treatment in various hospitals in the country.
The pressure on hospitals is excessively appalling and flu is pushing them to breaking point. Health officials maintain the outbreak is an annual occurrence during the winter.
China is dealing with an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), five years after the Covid-19 pandemic. Reports and social media posts suggest that the virus is spreading rapidly with hospitals and crematories being overwhelmed.
There are even claims that China has declared a state of emergency, though this has not been confirmed.
Alert in India
According to official sources, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) under the Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring cases of respiratory and seasonal influenza in the country and is also in contact with international agencies.
