AGARTALA, August 02, 2024: Former Tripura Chief Minister and MP Biplab Kumar Deb Friday met with Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Inland Waterways Sarbananda Sonwal at New Delhi to discuss the progress and new plans for transportation of goods by ship or watercraft across the country. During the meeting, Deb emphasised the need for speedy completion of the waterway project from Daudkandi in Bangladesh to Srimantapur in Tripura, as well as the extension of the protocol Gomuti river route from Sonamura to Udaipur.
He also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expedite the completion of the Bangladesh portion of the project. Deb underscored the importance of increasing river navigability, constructing stairs at identified locations, conserving river banks and completing the construction of allotted floating jetties in a timely manner.
During Deb's tenure as Chief Minister, an allocation of 24.52 crore rupees was received on February 22, 2022 for construction of nine new jetties, excavation of the Howrah river gorge and acceleration of work along twenty kms of the Sonamura-Daudkandi protocol route were also sanctioned.
However, due to objections from local residents, the project has faced delays. The central government is now prioritising a quick resolution to these issues.
Since taking office as Chief Minister in 2018, Biplab Kumar Deb has worked for launching the water transport route through Bangladesh to reduce the cost of transporting heavy and medium goods.
